FREE. A really fun, good-looking DAW packed with plugins and cool stuff for beginners. Basically a simpler Logic Pro. If you have a Mac and don't want to buy a DAW, GarageBand will help you record your first songs, and moving up to Logic later is painless because the look and the shortcuts are very similar. Unfortunately it's Apple-only, so there's no Windows version.
